Looking back on those small events in your life that define who you are can be a little surprising. I often held that I kept a pretty good inventory of the galvanizing events of my life, until I found the Myspace page of a friend I went to Kindergarten with (we've managed to quasi stay in touch over the last 20 years). Once seeing his page, I was immediately reminded of a pilgremage that Harris took to the mainland to see the house of the former Kurt Cobain. We stopped into a music store just down Colby Ave from Everett High School, where I had my accoustic violin, and he took a guitar off the shelf. This was about the moment I learned that he'd gotten into music.
What happened next was the stuff stories are made of. We jammed. Rather, we tried to jam. He knew some grunge / rock / stuff and I completely and utterly sucked at it. Not for lack of skill, but with familiarity with what he was playing. It was during this jam session that I made a deal with myself (it didn't cost my soul), that I would learn to adapt to any genre I come across. So far, it's worked pretty well for me. Harris likewise has gotten into other types of music - to see where he's gotten to, take a gander at Mandalicmaps.
