Great news. I still have a car. Granted, it cost me to have one of the worst days in the past few years to do it. But it's mine.

In January of 2004, the car was stolen in NYC. It was registered in Kentucky, etc etc. When the car was recovered, no one bothered to let the police know that it'd been found. How I was able to register the vehicle when I bought it from the same person it was stolen from, in September 2004, I don't know. I only know that I couldn't re-register it yesterday. Why? Because it was a stolen vehicle. My investigator and I came up with the conclusion that God only knows how the hell I got it registered, insured, and all that other stuff in the State of Georgia. That stuff should be impossible.

So, yesterday morning, I go to re-register the car. The tags were a few days expired, and it past time to renew them. Imagine my surprise when I'm got told that I 'get to go downtown'. My enthusiasm was a lot lower than my surprise was. So, I brought what I had to the station, and was told that this doensn't prove that I own the car. So what's next? I was given the chance to go back to FT Gordon, go through my stuff, and look for proof that I own the car. This was a process that took several hours. I came back nearly empty-handed. I knew that I'd turned in the completed and transferred old title, but couldn't find a double-sided copy of it. What's more, I didn't even realize that I had no title to the car, because it'd never been PRINTED. It was transferred into my name, as it should be, but how that happened while it was considered stolen, is beyond me. But, when they were getting ready to print the title, a year ago, they found that it was a stolen vehicle, didn't tell the Police, didn't tell Me, or Anybody Else Who Might Be Interested To Know That Little Speck Of Information.

So, off of a handwritten receipt, a partial copy of the previous title, and all that other great info I provided, my investigator was able to prove to some police dept in New York that my car had been recovered by the owner, and never reported. So, we aligned the planets - got New York to speak to Kentucky, and both of those states to talk to Georgia authorities. And lo, I still own the car.

And now, I'm only a WHOLE DAY LATE(R) in trying to leave this little corner of the world to go to a better place. Wish me luck. I'm going back to sleep.
