Sep. 4th, 2009 01:13 amI am finding ways around the lack of synchronicity between my backups and my live stuff before this computer gets wiped (or I just switch to the Ubuntu partition). I have some creative ways to not lose too much information, but I do not trust the contents of the windows partition on this system anymore (and will probably nuke it once the Ubuntu partition is working properly).
Symptoms:
Antivirus doesn't start/work/operate
Errors are suppressed (no error notifications or error log entries)
A website tried to force-feed me a trojan (well, that's where it started, the trojan was denied)
When I did get the antivirus to start (by disabling the memory scan), it scans one file at a time, and is stuck in a full system scan. For instance, it was scanning 1 file at a time (even small ones), and now it doesn't seem to be progressing at all (been scanning the same file for several minutes)... I'll check to see what file it is on when I wake up. At time of going to bed, 353,511 files scanned...
A bit of my screen is failing to refresh (maybe 10%, scattered...)
Oh, and even though I use no MSN at all; Firefox added a new add-on without my consent: Microsoft NET Framework Assistant 1.1.
OS info and stuff for those who'd like it:
Windows XP Media Center Edition SP3
Firefox 3.5.2
Avast Home 4.8
Gateway MX7120
AMD Mobile Athalon 64 Processor 3400+
2.19 GHz, 960 MB of RAM
After I wake up, I'll check the virus scan to see if anything is found. Lupin already has in his possession the trojan that tried to load, and can provide the domain it came from (if anyone is looking for additional malware). I have some creative ways to store some stuff online (without transmitting the malware with it). Oh, and I might finally learn how to automatically sync my backups on a regular basis...
So much for getting anything useful done...
