This is simply one helluva read, and I wish I kept in touch with some people who I made a bet with back in 2001... that we would become the world's best police state.  The comment of the day is down a ways after the article, "With agents like this in the TSA, who needs terrorists?"

In 2001, I was a Junior in high school. Bush's first public speech after the attack left me with one question: Why the hell is he creating a Department of Homeland Security? At the very least, doesn't all that jurisdiction fall under the Department of the Interior?

As days went on and new government constructs continued to be created, I questioned all of them. Why do we need a TSA? This was the first incident of its kind, and the FBI - the people who really should have been made responsible for investigating such things - knew about the plan and did nothing.

The only reason we're not at terror alert level orange (like we've been at since 2001) is because the DHS changed the scale recently to omit colors, so people might "take it more seriously".

Alas, this is on the bottom of a lot of people's lists of things to "fix", largely because, as one of the cartoons in her post pointed out quite well, people in this country are willing to do pretty much anything to feel safer. (I mean, hell, look at SUV sales.)
