...that at least, my mother truly is.

How did I find this out? Third-party observation. I'm not the least bit surprised to learn that my mother was consistently lying about her situation. By doing so, she was protecting her independence, and she knows exactly what's at stake if her children (my sister and I) realize that she's no longer able to care for herself.

What surprised me was the degree to which she'd declined behind our backs... showing up 'to work' at a place where she'd been fired over a year ago. Granted, she worked there for 12 to 15 years, she shouldn't still be showing up for work. Losing her cell phone and purse, something that used to happen once or so a year, now happening once every couple of months. (by losing it, she would sit down, whether in the ladies room or on a bus, get up and walk away from her belongings)

So, if she gets diagnosed with Alzheimer's and/or Dementia, there may be some open doors for the state to take care of her. Given that she has no medical insurance or life insurance to speak of, if the government is not able to take care of her, then the burden will pass to us, and all her medical bills will pass to us when her estate is handed down.

My own health is steady, so to follow up on my liver and kidneys, I have years yet before I need to start worrying. I'm off of the medications that were destroying my plumbing, so at least I can say that THAT situation is about as good as it can be.

I was going to sprinkle some humor in between crushing posts - and I'm sure that to some degree I'm still rolling with the punches. But, the punches just keep on comin'...
