Quoted by JC (no detailing who I got this from...)

"Has anyone heard of Life Gems? Talk about morbid. You can have your
pets or one of your family members compressed into a diamond. Can
you just imagine showing off your diamond ring and explaining to
people that it is your mother or father. This world is pretty
twisted sometimes."

...aaaaand my response:

Oi... I'm checking them out now. While it may appear morbid, it also
appears that they are false. *frantically looks for a quick way to
disprove them*

They tout that more than 50 1ct (one carat) diamonds could be made
from the carbon in just one body. Ok... 18.5% of your body weight is
carbon... http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/may99/927309210.An.r.html
...
and 1 carat is equal to 1/5th of a gram (roughly 5 carats to equal the
weight of a paper clip)... drat. Back to being morbid...

If I were to use this option for anyone, it would be as some sort of
marker for their remains, or to keep the family all in one place (as
it grows larger, no thanks to my own efforts *g*). Aside from that
though, it's an expensive parlor trick.

Aside from that though, at least my family would still reside at a
cemetary. The only difference that this would make would be rental
space (using one urn crucible / cubicle to house generations instead
of having family spread out all over the place). Besides, a
taskmaster would love that option. "Hi Sally, Mom, Dad, Grandma,
Grandpa and the rest of ya - y'all will have to just put up with me
while I talk to Sue, but I'll get to ya in a minute." Nah. I
couldn't bring myself to do that...

Now I'm reminded of old fables, myths and/or legends regarding Liches,
who (depending who you ask) are animated dead, whose life force is
stored in either a sepulcher, or within a gem. None of this paragraph
should have any effect on the real world, of course, but it's just one
more thing that'll keep someone up at night. The source of this is
from high fantasy and role-playing games - but I'll be looking at
diamonds in a whole new light.

Blech.
