Possession
Mar. 11th, 2007 01:14 pmMy possessions took possession of me for the past several years - very carefully. It was one of those moments when I realized just how much of my stuff that I don't need - but if it was somehow lost or broken I'd replace it, without even a momentary discussion with myself as to why I'm replacing it.
The last time I thought about this was back when I was first buying a laptop (in addition to owning a desktop), and thinking about maintaining two computers instead of one. Four years since then, I've acquired enough furniture to fill up a 1200 sq ft apartment (I'm living by myself, btw), five bookshelves full of books and knick-knacks, a budding DVD collection, a collection of miniature dragons (MINE!), I went from 1 to 3 violins, and enough clothing to outfit a personal army. I am not including the amount of dice I've collected (I bought six more sets last night, because I accidentally let the movers pack all my other dice - these six sets should hold me over till I move).
Some of these possessions I have bought from others, some I have not. In some cases, I intend on donating some of the books to the library, or through a charitable organization (to get a receipt for the printed value of the books for taxes), some of the books I'll offer back to those who I bought them from (in those times of crisis where they were selling off their stuff to continue to live), etc. More than 10 boxes of books are a royal pain to move about, and in the past four years, I've collected, but not actually read much of anything.
